Objectives and content

If you are looking for interactive classes to acquire a basic knowledge of spoken Arabic as soon as possible, you came to the right place!

  • You learn to have short conversations on general topics such as house and furniture, professions, countries and capitals, customs, tea parties, health and illness, education and work.
  • You start from communicative actions such as introducing yourself, exchanging personal information, expressing wishes, thanking and refusing, formulating presence or absence, offering items, giving someone your regards, counting, asking or ordering, signaling a problem in a hotel room.
  • You can function socially on a survival level in situations of welcoming, spatial orientation, utilities, arrangements and meetings, official bodies and work.
  • You increasingly familiarize yourself with the structure of the basic singular form of the simple present and a few common weak verbs.
  • You use the negation of the noun phrase in the present tense, the internal and external plural of the nouns, a few common adjectives and the nisba, the plural forms of personal pronouns, the singular demonstrative pronoun in dependent and independent use, the personal suffix as personal pronoun, prepositions, expressing time.
  • You will not study pompous classical Arabic, but practical communication which helps a beginner to survive using the language. The course therefore uses simplified standard Arabic, which is open to spoken variations and specifically those from the Levant.

Required prior knowledge

  • You have successfully completed the course Survival Arabic A or you will take the orientation test in the first class.
  • You recognize connected and isolated letters of the Arabic alphabet.
  • You can write simple and familiar basic words, at a slow speed and with support, and you can recognize familiar words in non-vocalized writing.
  • You can get by in situations of greeting, meeting, visiting or ordering a drink.
  • You can ask for directions to a public building and you can briefly introduce your family and colleagues.
  • You know a few basic verbs in the singular form of the present tense, the assimilation of the article, a simple negative or affirmative sentence and a question, the suffix in possessive use (without cases).
  • You recognize the gender of nouns.

Tests

There is a placement test and a final test.
