Objectives and content

This course is aimed at doctors (in training) who want to improve their English language proficiency, as needed on the job. This course can also be of interest to people in other (para)medical trainings and professions. The course will teach you how to communicate fluently and efficiently with patients and colleagues and will increase your English language proficiecy in a medical context.

This course is built on the professional communication between healthcare providers/patients and healthcare providers themselves. You will acquire a broad range of specific medical vocabulary (diseases, treatments, anatomy, etc.) by means of vocabulary exercises and interactive speaking exercises that approach the professional context as much as possible. This way, you will practice the following situations for example: asking the right questions about the patient's history, delivering bad news or explaining diagnostic procedures and treatment options in patient-oriented language. Furthermore, specific grammatical items that are important in these situations will be discussed (e.g. using the correct tenses, asking appropriate questions, giving polite instructions, etc.). The course comprises six units with the following topics

  • Unit 1: Medical education and practice
  • Unit 2: Patient intake
  • Unit 3: Human anatomy
  • Unit 4: Examining a patient
  • Unit 5: Diagnosis and treatment
  • Unit 6: Prevention and screening

Required prior knowledge

You have good practical knowledge of English (level B2 = secondary school level of English).

If you register for this course, you need sufficient prior knowledge related to the causes, symptoms and treatments of (relatively) common conditions. For this reason, this course is recommended to medicine students who have completed the first two bachelor years.
