Objectives and content

  • Speaking skills: In the speaking exercises, we will deal with nuanced opinions, discussing personal experiences, etc.
  • Listening skills: Authentic material is used as much as possible in classes. You will be able to follow more complex explanations.
  • Reading skills: We will mainly work with authentic texts (a.o. news paper articles).
  • Writing skills: By means of practical writing exercises, you will practice grammar and vocabulary in realistic contexts. We will also mainly focus on the correct use of tenses.
  • Vocabulary: Each chapter covers a specific theme o expand vocabulary and deal with several grammatical items. We will also focus on idiomatic expressions and collocations, as well as Italian for business purposes.
  • A number oftopics from the course: work, art, technology, etc.
  • Specific grammar items: The tenses of the congiuntivo (presente/imperfetto/passato e trapassato), il periodo ipotetico (sentences starting with SE), conjuncts (+indicativo/congiuntivo), recognizing the passato remoto, la concordanza dei modi/tempi.

Required prior knowledge

  • You already have quite extensive knowledge of Italian: you can understand spoken Italian very well, even when spoken fast.
  • You can participate quite easily in a conversation on topics that you are familiar with (job, hobbies, etc.) You can use complex sentences in these situations.
  • You can use the following tenses: l’indicativo presente, il futuro semplice, il condizionale semplice, l’imperativo (tutte le forme), il condizionale composto, il passato prossimo, l’imperfetto, il congiuntivo presente, la forma passiva.
  • In addition, being able to use the following grammar items is required: i pronomi personali, possessivi, diretti, indiretti, combinati; i gradi di comparazione, i pronomi relativi, gli avverbi.

Tests

There is a placement test and a final test.
