Objectives and content

In this course, you will learn how to express yourself in the past, present and future tense, both when writing and speaking. At the end of this course, you will be able to have a simple conversation at work, in a shop or at a restaurant. You will be able to write a short text about yourself, your family, your hobbies, your house, your eating habits or a holiday.
The course will emphasise continental Portuguese, by which we mean that the teacher will instruct the grammar as used in Portugal. However, we will pay attention to the (small) distinctions from Brazilian Portuguese and African Portuguese (Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau). After all, continental Portuguese grammar is the perfect foundation to acquire the other variants.

  • Listening skills: At the end of the course, you can understand sentences directly related to you (family, work, etc.).
  • Speaking skills: At the end of the course, you can talk about simple and everyday topics, using simple sentences.
  • Reading skills: At the end of the course, you are able to read short and simple texts. You can find information in simple, everyday texts such as advertisements, menus and timetables as well.
  • Writing skills: The newly acquired structures will be practised by writing short, simple texts (e.g. What did you do this weekend? or writing an email to thank something).
  • Specific grammatical topics: the difference between the “pretérito perfeito simples”, “composto” and “imperfeito”, the “futuro indicativo”, personal pronouns (different forms and their place in a sentence), the use of prepositions.

Required prior knowledge

You have already followed a course of Portuguese, but your knowledge is limited to the basic structures:

  • Speaking Portuguese is very difficult: you can only formulate short sentences and your vocabulary is limited to very general topics.
  • You understand Portuguese speakers only when they speak very slowly and clearly.
  • When you read general texts in Portuguese, many words and constructions still seem unfamiliar to you.
  • When you write Portuguese, you only formulate short and simple sentences.
  • When you speak Portuguese, you already use the “indicativo presente” and the “pretérito perfeito simples”.

Tests

There is a placement test and a final test.
