Objectives and content

  • Communication skills are key to this course: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Special emphasis is put on talking freely. To achieve this, we use the grammar and vocabulary items that were covered in the two previous levels as a basis. Using current topics and themes from both personal and work life, we practise the various skills and broaden specific grammar topics.
  • Topics: (dealing with) language, work life, the media, healthy living, film, characteristics, etc.
  • Grammar: sentence structure and linking words, the passive, etc.
  • Vocabulary: focus on expanding the basic vocabulary with idiomatic expressions and on recognizing 'false friends'

Required prior knowledge

The required level of prior knowledge for this course is B1.

  • You already have good prior knowledge of German: You can have an argumentative conversation and give a short presentation on a familiar topic, albeit with mistakes.
  • You can write a simple text, such as a formal or informal letter, albeit with mistakes. You can understand the gist of a spoken text, e.g. a news broadcast.
  • You can understand a written text on a familiar topic and you are able to find the key points of a text on an unfamiliar topic.
  • You are familiar with the following items of basic grammar: the cases and their functions, adjective endings, present and past tenses, Konjunktiv II.

Tests

There is a placement test and a final test.
During the first session, you take an orientation test. This way, the teacher can give more information about the feasability of the course (level, progression, etc.). You can be referred to a different course based on the outcome of the orientation test but you can only take that course if places are available.
